With roots stretching back more than 400 years, Stanglwirt has grown from a rustic inn into a 171-room iconic alpine hotel located just outside the well-known jetset destination of Kitzbühel. Today, it draws athletes, celebrities, and families alike—offering world-class boxing, horseback riding, fly-fishing, fine dining, and a spa experience like no other.
Capturing the full essence of Stanglwirt in a single article is a near-impossible task. This is a place that offers far more than can be conveyed in a few pages—or even after several days of immersive experience.

Despite spending four activity-packed days here, we left with a clear sense that we had only begun to uncover its depth. Each day revealed new facets of its unique blend of tradition, luxury, and authentic alpine culture, yet much still remains undiscovered.
Born in a Room, Built a Legacy
Stanglwirt is still family-run, a rare example of enduring stewardship where history, values, and entrepreneurship intersect to create something truly unique. This is not a story of rapid expansion, but of deliberate growth rooted in identity. Every decision reflects a careful balance between innovation and tradition.
Today, the hotel is a large, multifaceted operation with 171 rooms, a vast spa, extensive sports facilities, and an international reputation. Yet, it remains guided by a hands-on leadership philosophy. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hauser are deeply engaged in daily operations, with Balthasar Hauser frequently seen strolling through the common areas, engaging warmly with guests and staff alike. This approachable style is integral to the hotel’s character.

Importantly, the business is not dependent on a single generation. The Hausers’ three children, involved from a young age, now hold substantial leadership roles. They actively shape marketing, guest experience, strategic development, and digital transformation. By blending the wisdom of the founders with fresh perspectives, Stanglwirt remains firmly rooted yet forward-looking.
A telling detail: Balthasar Hauser’s office is still the very room where he was born—entirely analog, free of computers or digital devices, relying on paper, pen, telephone, and intuition. This traditional approach is a conscious choice, reflecting his philosophy toward business and people. In a world accelerating daily, he opts for a slower, more authentic pace.
A Legacy that Began with a Song: Heritage, Hard Work, and Vision
The story of Stanglwirt did not start with luxury suites or expansive alpine spas—it began with music, warmth, and genuine local hospitality. Balthasar Hauser’s grandmother was a talented performer and charismatic figure who played a crucial role in establishing the original inn as a vibrant regional hub. Long before it evolved into a luxury alpine resort, Stanglwirt was already a beloved local institution, thanks to her natural ability to make guests feel welcomed and entertained.
The true turning point for the family-owned hotel came under difficult circumstances. When Balthasar’s father passed away unexpectedly, he was only 17 years old but stepped up to lead the business. What followed was not merely preservation but transformation.
Grounded firmly in family traditions yet driven by a clear vision for growth, Balthasar began shaping Stanglwirt into one of Europe’s most iconic and values-driven luxury hotels. This evolution was not driven by outside capital or consultants, but by intuition, strong identity, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

As a farmer’s son, Balthasar embraced hard work wholeheartedly. Much of the hotel’s early expansion was literally built by his own hands. The most remarkable example is the 12,000-square-meter spa, uniquely clad in natural stone and rock. Over four years, Balthasar personally transported tons of rock from the surrounding mountains to create what remains one of the largest and most distinctive hotel spas in the alpine region—a tangible legacy etched into the landscape, stone by stone.
Wellness with a View – and a Soul
The spa at Stanglwirt is far more than an architectural achievement; it is a fully immersive sensory experience. Beyond a multitude of pools, saunas, and treatment rooms, the spa features one of the cleanest and most pristine plunge pools observed, alongside a full-scale waterslide that consistently delights younger guests. The design thoughtfully separates tranquil relaxation zones from lively, family-friendly areas, making it equally suited for couples seeking peace and families with active children
A standout feature is the in-pool cinema screen, which plays children’s movies—a rare, thoughtful detail that embodies Stanglwirt’s ethos: luxury hospitality with genuine warmth and care.

The wellness experience extends outdoors across expansive green lawns framed by alpine panoramas. Several outdoor pools stretch toward the meadows, complemented by strategically placed lounge chairs for guests seeking to unwind. The setting is further distinguished by the hotel’s own flock of sheep grazing just steps from the pool’s edge. This juxtaposition—soaking in a high-end outdoor pool while sheep calmly graze nearby—perfectly illustrates Stanglwirt’s unique balance between nature, comfort, and authenticity.

Nature, Horses, and Handcrafted Hospitality
Stanglwirt’s offerings extend well beyond the spa, creating a diverse playground suited for all ages and interests. Equestrian enthusiasts can explore alpine meadows on horseback, riding one of the hotel’s 24 majestic Lipizzaner horses—housed in what ranks among the region’s most exceptional equestrian facilities.

Just steps from the main building, a gently flowing mountain stream transforms into a fly-fishing retreat where guests can catch fresh trout in pristine alpine waters. For families, the on-site kids’ club goes far beyond a typical playroom: it is a full-scale traditional Tyrolean farmhouse complete with a garden, climbing frames, zip lines, swings, and notably, a small petting zoo. Here, children interact directly with goats, rabbits, ponies, and other gentle animals—an engaging, hands-on experience that distinguishes Stanglwirt from conventional hotel offerings.
Train Like a Champion – or Just Feel Like One
If the spa embodies Stanglwirt’s soul, the training facilities represent its strength—and an impressive one at that. This is, without exaggeration, one of the most comprehensive and high-quality fitness complexes available at any hotel. It’s not just the scale that stands out, but the level of professionalism, variety, and atmosphere.
The sports complex includes 13 tennis courts, both indoor and outdoor padel courts, a professional boxing ring, and even a high-altitude training chamber simulating conditions at 4,500 meters—designed for athletes serious about their performance. This reputation has made Stanglwirt a preferred destination for elite athletes and sports teams, who come not only for training camps but also to relax, confident that neither their performance nor their family’s experience will be compromised.

The gym is spacious, naturally lit, and exceptionally well-equipped—a space that encourages movement without intimidation. Among regular guests is Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose frequent visits are commemorated by signed photos and personal notes. He is far from alone; Stanglwirt has long attracted celebrities, athletes, and public figures seeking discretion, excellence, and authentic hospitality. Its “hall of fame” wall, rich with photos and dedications, is a testament to the loyalty it commands.

Whether you’re here for focused professional training or simply to fit in a workout before breakfast, Stanglwirt offers the facilities, space, and environment to do so—where world-class performance and family leisure genuinely coexist.
Inspiration for the Next Generation
Stanglwirt’s dedication to wellness and physical activity extends well beyond adult guests. The hotel invests deeply in children and youth, not only by providing facilities but through thoughtfully designed experiences that aim to inspire and engage. Daily sports sessions—such as boxing and football—are led by professional athletes, offering young guests more than standard hotel programming. These are hands-on, skill-building activities with genuine role models.

In addition to daily offerings, Stanglwirt regularly hosts youth camps where children spend several days training, learning, and building confidence under the guidance of elite sports personalities. These camps provide a rare chance for young guests to meet their heroes and receive coaching in a supportive, professional environment. For many, these experiences create lasting memories and can even spark the beginning of a lifelong passion.
Tradition, Not Trend – Without Compromising Comfort
After days filled with sports, play, and inspiration, retreating to a calm and thoughtfully designed accommodation offers a welcome contrast. Our suite is spacious and thoughtfully designed: two generous bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, connected by a large central living area. The décor embraces a traditional alpine style—wood accents, warm tones, and handcrafted details—without sacrificing modern comfort or freshness. The overall impression is one of meticulous upkeep, understated elegance, and genuine luxury.

Linens and towels rank among the softest we’ve encountered, and the beds offer an ideal balance between firmness and comfort. One minor drawback is the turndown service, which feels more ritualistic than substantial, marked only by a small chocolate placed beside the bed.

On our first evening, we savor a bottle of the hotel’s own sparkling wine on the balcony, framed by a breathtaking view of the Wilder Kaiser massif’s jagged peaks catching the last light of day. Moments like these capture the essence of Stanglwirt — why guests return not merely for the facilities but for the unmistakable sense of place.
From Farm to Fork – Deeply Rooted in Tradition
Stanglwirt is more than a luxury hotel; it is a functioning farm where a genuine connection to the land is central to the guest experience. Much of the food served originates directly from the hotel’s own pastures and dairies, underscoring a firm commitment to quality, sustainability, and traceability.
A vivid example of this heritage is the artisanal cheese produced high in the alpine meadows during summer months. After production, the cheese is carefully transported down the mountain by horse to mature in an underground cheese cave on the estate. Although this cheese cellar is not accessible to guests, we were granted a rare glimpse inside—offering insight into a hands-on process intimately tied to the hotel’s agricultural roots.

This authentic connection is particularly fitting considering Balthasar Hauser’s upbringing as a farmer’s son. His deep respect for hard work and nature is evident throughout Stanglwirt, shaping a culinary philosophy that prioritizes authenticity and craftsmanship over mere presentation.
Breakfast for a Village – Crafted by a Family
Breakfast at Stanglwirt is a generous and robust affair. The main restaurant offers an extensive buffet, featuring everything from vibrant fresh fruits and berries to warm, just-baked rolls and eggs prepared to order. The omelettes stand out for their precision, and the bread consistently impresses with its quality.
However, despite the consistently high standard of food, the atmosphere is far from intimate. As a large-scale hotel, the bustling flow of guests is evident—not in the freshness or replenishment of the offerings, but in the lively, communal nature of the dining room. While it’s possible to find a quiet corner, breakfast here is more a lively ritual than a tranquil start to the day.

Nonetheless, the overall impression is unmistakable: Stanglwirt approaches food with seriousness and respect—not through fine-dining extravagance, but through craftsmanship, genuine care, and a strong connection to tradition.
Dining at Stanglwirt: From Elegant Evenings to Rustic Authenticity
Each evening, the main restaurant at Stanglwirt offers a meticulously crafted seven-course dinner, beginning with a fresh salad buffet, followed by soup, appetizer, main course, cheese buffet, and dessert. The menu combines alpine tradition with modern culinary techniques, delivering a refined dining experience that reflects the hotel’s dedication to quality and local heritage.
Families are well catered for, with a dedicated children’s buffet designed to meet younger guests’ tastes and nutritional needs. Children are also welcome to order from the main menu, providing flexibility and inclusiveness in dining options.
For a contrasting experience, the Gasthof offers a more intimate and rustic atmosphere where Stanglwirt’s culinary excellence shines brightest. Here, guests dine just feet away from the hotel’s own cows—separated by a glass partition—creating an authentic farm-to-table ambiance rarely found in luxury hotels. The extensive, thoughtfully curated wine list complements the hearty, high-quality dishes, with meats often sourced directly from Stanglwirt’s own herd.

Together, these dining venues embody the hotel’s commitment to genuine, locally rooted gastronomy, balancing sophistication with warmth and authenticity.
A Place So Vast, We Barely Scratched the Surface
Despite spending four full days at Stanglwirt, we left with the clear impression that we had only begun to grasp the full extent of what the property offers. The estate is far larger and more diverse than anticipated — not only in scale but in variety. From wellness and sports to animals, dining, and children’s activities, the scope was simply too broad to fully explore in our limited time.
One natural consequence of this richness — coupled with a tightly scheduled program — was that we never ventured beyond the hotel grounds. The jagged peaks of the Wilder Kaiser massif loomed constantly in the background, a striking reminder of the surrounding nature we did not have the chance to experience firsthand.
We had planned to visit Mountain Adventure World, a network of themed mountain-top playgrounds and educational trails accessible by gondolas and lifts in the Wilder Kaiser region. This expansive concept consists of multiple “worlds,” each designed to offer a distinct experience. Examples include enchanted forest paths with fairy-tale elements, barefoot sensory trails that engage all senses, water parks for active play, climbing areas for various skill levels, and interactive nature stations aimed at teaching children about alpine flora, fauna, and traditional mountain life.
The initiative clearly focuses on combining outdoor activity, learning, and family entertainment in an engaging and safe environment. It appears particularly suited for families looking for varied mountain experiences beyond conventional hiking — with plenty of opportunities to stay active, explore nature, and stimulate curiosity in children of different ages.
While we missed the chance to experience Mountain Adventure World ourselves, the concept seems to transcend the idea of a mere rainy-day option or a peripheral activity. Instead, it positions itself as a complementary destination that can significantly enrich a family’s stay in the region. For those traveling with children, it arguably adds a compelling dimension to the overall visit — one that integrates education, adventure, and alpine culture seamlessly.
The upside? This leaves room for a future visit — one where mountain adventures will take center stage, adding another layer to an already rich experience.
