It was supposed to be a highlight of our Berlin visit — a celebratory dinner at FACIL, the two-star Michelin restaurant tucked inside The Mandala Hotel. We’d looked forward to it for weeks — reading reviews, studying the menu, building anticipation bite by bite. So when we arrived, hungry and expectant, only to be met with a puzzled maître d’, the realization dawned quickly and painfully: we had mistakenly booked for the wrong day. Not just the wrong time — the wrong day altogether.
To make matters worse, it was a Friday night, the dining room was full, and the waitlist had no mercy. The staff at FACIL were gracious, especially the maître d’, who tried everything to work some magic — but this was not an evening for miracles.
Or so we thought.
Instead of sending us away, he picked up the phone and spoke to Qiu, the Mandala’s other restaurant just across the lobby. “They’re expecting you,” he said with a sympathetic smile. We were skeptical — could anything really compare to the fine dining experience we’d just been denied?
An Unexpected Turn — and a Welcome One
But from the moment we stepped into Qiu Bar & Restaurant, things shifted. The mood was warm and inviting, combining cosmopolitan sleekness with relaxed comfort. The space features contemporary furniture, clean lines, soft ambient lighting, and large floor-to-ceiling windows bringing a sense of openness and light. The soundtrack was a subtle mix of laid-back lounge beats, reinforcing a modern hotel vibe — elegant yet approachable. Konrad, the attentive restaurant manager, welcomed us personally and made sure we felt right at home.
We were dining with our two sons, and it felt intimate enough for a special evening, but relaxed enough to be comfortable with children in tow. It wasn’t the ceremony of a starred restaurant — and thank god for that. With the wear of a long travel day in our bones, this was exactly the right pace.
A Toast to the Unexpected
Before the food even arrived, we raised our glasses — a crisp glass of Champagne, perfectly chilled and celebratory enough to reclaim the evening. Later, a classic Caipirinha, sharp with lime and sugarcane, cut through the richness of the food like a warm breeze. Our sons were not left out and enjoyed their own tropical delights: virgin Piña Coladas served in elegant glasses, complete with tasteful decoration and big smiles.

From the Same Kitchen as FACIL — But with a Twist
What we soon discovered made the whole mix-up feel like a lucky accident: Qiu shares its kitchen with FACIL. That’s right — same chefs, same attention to detail, same ingredient quality — but in a more flexible, less intimidating format.
The menu is styled as a modern riff on tapas, though you don’t share dishes. Instead, each guest chooses three to four smaller plates, which are served one at a time — like a personal tasting menu, minus the formalities.
Every dish felt thoughtful but unpretentious. No tweezers, no foam — just real food, crafted with finesse.
A few highlights: perfectly tender grilled octopus, with a texture so meatily satisfying and not a hint of the chewiness that often plagues this dish. Rinderfiletspitzen with parsley and truffle tagliatelle — rich, savory, and deeply comforting.

Fascination Beyond the Plate
Beyond the food, we were fascinated by The Mandala Hotel itself, a five-star boutique property with 158 rooms, exuding understated luxury and calm in the heart of Berlin right next to Potsdamer Platz. What makes the experience even more special is that both the hotel and its two restaurants are privately owned, and we were told the two owners remain deeply involved in the daily operations. Their hands-on approach is clearly reflected in the seamless service and genuine atmosphere throughout.
After this visit, we are more than eager to return and explore what else this intriguing hotel has to offer — not least to finally experience FACIL.
The Verdict
We walked into The Mandala expecting Michelin perfection, and instead stumbled upon something even better: a night that surprised us, delighted us, and ultimately fit our mood — and our family — far more than FACIL might have.
Yes, we missed our reservation. But thanks to Konrad, the gracious host, the brilliant kitchen staff, and a little twist of fate, we got a dinner we’ll remember far longer.
And for what it’s worth: Qiu cost a fraction of FACIL’s tasting menu. But the experience? Every bit as rich.
