Family Luxury at Ritz-Carlton Berlin

Berlin is a city that offers a rich tapestry of history and vibrant modern life. On our recent family trip to the Alps, we chose the Ritz-Carlton Berlin at Potsdamer Platz as a convenient and luxurious two-night stop to break up the long journey. When traveling with children, selecting the right hotel becomes crucial — it must be comfortable, offer a high level of service, and be genuinely family-friendly. The Ritz-Carlton manages to strike this balance with remarkable finesse.

From the moment we arrived, the warm welcome stood out. The staff greeted us outside, promptly took care of our car, and ensured the check-in was smooth and efficient. Their pride in working at the Ritz-Carlton shone through: service was professional yet naturally warm, never scripted or forced. This authenticity set the tone for our entire stay.

Newly renovated with attention to detail

The hotel underwent a thorough renovation a few years ago, evident in the impeccable condition and style throughout. Modern elegance meets practical functionality in the design and materials. The standard rooms are spacious and equipped with everything needed for a restful stay—effective sound insulation and blackout curtains, a comfortable bed (and intuitive A/C and shower controls!) A detail that particularly caught our eye was the shoe shining service. This was no mere, the far too often encountered, silicone sponge wipe-down but a genuine shoe care treatment—an uncommon touch that speaks volumes about the hotel’s commitment to quality.

Although the hotel does not offer a traditional kids’ club, thoughtful touches ensure young guests still feel seen and welcomed. The addition of the Ritz-Kids “Cozy Corner” in the guest room provides children with their own dedicated space — a small tent, soft cushions, and age-appropriate details create an inviting nook for quiet play or story time.

The Presidential Suite – Spacious luxury

Our stay in the Presidential Suite was beyond what words can fully capture. Vast and tastefully furnished, the suite never felt cold or impersonal.

It was ideal for our family with two separate bedrooms and the children immediately delighted in playing hide-and-seek across its generous spaces, while there was ample room for relaxation and activities for all of us.

The suite’s bathtub is almost like a small pool, and the water jets quickly became the kids’ favorite feature. The ensuing foam party, sparked by a bit of shower gel, was as entertaining for us adults as for the children — perhaps less so for the cleaning staff, though they were always smiling.

An unexpected luxury was the treadmill in the suite, allowing for a private workout in an opulent setting — something rare in even the most premium hotel rooms. The blend of practical family touches with luxury elements, such as cookies and milk for the children alongside our bottle of champagne on arrival, exemplifies what one should expect from a true top-tier hotel.

Welcome Amenities – Thoughtful touches that elevate the entire stay

One of the most memorable aspects of our stay at the Ritz-Carlton Berlin was the sheer generosity and refinement of the welcome amenities awaiting us in the suite — a detail that, while often overlooked in high-end hospitality, here served as a powerful signal of the hotel’s attention to the guest experience. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an arrangement that felt more curated than standard: a perfectly chilled bottle of champagne alongside a large bowl of fresh fruit — not merely decorative, but genuinely enjoyable. For the children, a tray with freshly baked cookies and small bottles of milk had been set up at their eye level, instantly making them feel not just tolerated, but actively welcomed.

In addition to this, a separate selection of chocolates and petits fours had been placed on the dining table — each piece beautifully crafted and rich in flavour, closer to something one might find in a dedicated pâtisserie than a hotel offering. Thoughtfully personalised notes accompanied several of the items, including a welcome letter and activity suggestions tailored for families, further reinforcing the sense that we were not just anonymous guests, but individuals whose experience genuinely mattered.

The cumulative effect of these details went far beyond indulgence. It created a layered sense of hospitality — one that spoke to the idea that true luxury lies in being known, anticipated, and cared for. In a competitive field where many luxury hotels offer a polished but impersonal experience, the Ritz-Carlton Berlin distinguished itself by weaving thoughtfulness into every welcome gesture.

Breakfast – A generous and varied start to the day

One memory that will last is the in-room breakfast dining experience. The breakfast itself was impressively generous and varied. Large bowls of fresh berries and fruit were paired with nearly every imaginable choice. One standout was the signature dish featuring caviar-topped egg on avocado and rye bread—a luxurious yet innovative combination that we highly recommend.

Sunday LEGO lunch – Playful elegance

On Sundays, the hotel hosts The Great Sunday lunch at inhouse restaurant POTS, a concept that perfectly blends high-quality dining with family-friendly fun. While parents enjoy a thoughtfully curated three-course menu inspired by seasonal ingredients, children are invited to explore a dedicated LEGO corner. This playful setting offers kids the chance to build and create, keeping them happily engaged while adults relax. For families wanting to extend the LEGO experience beyond the hotel, the nearby LEGO Discovery Center provides an immersive world of interactive play and creativity, adding an extra layer of entertainment to a Berlin visit. The combination of fine dining and child entertainment makes the lunch a memorable highlight for families.

Dinner at POTS – Renewed traditional German cuisine

Dining at POTS was a consistently excellent experience. One of the most engaging aspects was the open kitchen layout, which transformed the meal into a form of live culinary theatre. From our table, we could observe the chefs moving with calm precision — plating dishes with deliberate care, tasting sauces, and communicating softly with one another. It added a sense of authenticity and transparency, reinforcing our confidence in the quality of the food.

Our meal maintained a high standard throughout the evening, and the staff skillfully accommodated our children’s needs without compromising the overall service. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, never stuffy or overly formal — truly a genuine dining experience.

The Curtain Club – Crafted cocktails

Another highlight was The Curtain Club, the hotel’s bar, where we savored expertly crafted cocktails. Each drink was balanced and thoughtfully prepared, making it an ideal spot to unwind after busy days of exploring. Besides the drinks at the Curtain Club – every day at 6 PM, all guests are invited to the lobby for a glass of sparkling wine paired with live music.

This ritual creates a charming social moment and a chance to mingle with a diverse international crowd — families, young couples, seniors, business travelers, and VIPs with personal security details alike. Despite the variety, the atmosphere remains calm and respectful, with discretion and quality service at the forefront. Note however that since the sparkling wine reception is brief, punctuality is essential to enjoy it fully.

Location – A perfect blend of city and nature

Situated centrally at Potsdamer Platz, the hotel offers excellent connections to Berlin’s cultural landmarks. Within comfortable walking distance is Checkpoint Charlie, one of Berlin’s most iconic Cold War sites. After exploring the area around Checkpoint Charlie, with its informative exhibits and historical atmosphere, we returned towards the hotel and stopped for a simple yet well-prepared lunch at the newly opened restaurant W66. This modern and minimalist spot focuses on high-quality regional ingredients, offering a concise menu that emphasizes balance and rich flavors. The efficient and straightforward service made it an excellent choice for a quick, satisfying meal during our city exploration.

The hotel is also situated very close to Tiergarten, a vast green oasis featuring playgrounds and serene walking paths — perfect for children to run freely and for adults to enjoy a quiet break from the city buzz. The ability to easily combine urban energy with family-friendly outdoor space was a major advantage.

Summary

Ritz-Carlton Berlin delivers on its premium reputation while remaining warmly family-friendly without feeling forced or generic. The combination of exceptional service, tasteful rooms, and carefully considered amenities makes it an excellent choice for those seeking both comfort and luxury in Berlin.

The location near Tiergarten offers a perfect blend of city excitement and tranquil nature, and the guest mix creates a vibrant yet respectful atmosphere that spans generations and interests. While the weather prevented us from enjoying the Secret Champagne Garden’s afternoon tea this time, it remains a promising highlight for future visits.

For travelers, with or without children, who desire an elegant, reliable, and truly luxurious hotel experience in Berlin, the Ritz-Carlton is a clear and highly recommended choice.
